Works
My inspirations have come from the works of Charles Prendergast, Childe Hassam, Stanford White, and from the copperplate etchings of Stephen Scott Young. When I create in wood and gold, I often remember what Cellini wrote: “Always embellish with real gold. And if you are not fairly paid, God will reward you.” The reward, I believe, is a chance to see a beautiful painting illuminated in its own special gem setting, and perhaps it is a chance to see the depth and beauty of light absorbed and refracted from a carved and gilded surface. As I work in my studio, I often hear the words of my father, Hubert Shuptrine: “You must see and create beyond the surface level—art should evoke emotion.” Gilding and painting in watercolor extends and completes that emotion for me.
